SIMPLIFY
Just the word 'simplify' in Mathematics can paralyse a student. As if it isn't hard enough already - the simplified form never appears any simpler. Arrrghhh!

Later you are bombarded with mixed messages like KISS why not just say "keep it simple", but so that it sounds funny and creates an acronym we add STUPID. Keep it Simple STUPID. Why not just say "keep it simple"?

Maths is clearly difficult, otherwise why would we be bombarded with phrases like Make maths fun, so does that mean if students are not engaged we should be choosing 'funner' activities?

I'm confused.

In this session I would like to share some simple ideas gleaned over 35 Years plus of teaching and watching good teachers teach.
Dr Paul Swan
Dr Paul Swan has taught mathematics in both primary and secondary schools and worked as a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics Education at Edith Cowan University in Australia for 18 years.

He has written over 50 books including the award winning Maths Terms and Tables. He has authored numerous journal articles and created many types of mathematics games – board, card and digital.
He currently designs mathematics manipulative materials and supports schools looking to improve the teaching of mathematics in both schools and across whole school systems. He travels widely to share GIFTS (Good Ideas for Teaching), having even worked in Wuhan before anybody knew where it was!

He has received numerous awards, including an Honorary Fellowship of the Australian Council for Educational Leaders (ACEL) for his work with School Leaders.
For his contribution to Mathematics Education in his home state of Western Australia he was awarded an Honorary Life Membership by the Mathematics Association of Western Australia. He received his PhD in 2002 for his study of the computational choices made by 10 - 12 year old students. He currently continues to write and develop materials that may be found on his website www.drpaulswan.com.au as well as acting as a private consultant and professional learning provider to schools.

Alan Kidd
HOW DO I KNOW I'M A GOOD TEACHER?
How do I know I’m a good teacher?

At a time where so much is being asked of teachers, it is easy to lose sight of your incredibly important role and knowledge that you are making a difference.

Let’s not overthink this, the little things matter and when you feel like saying “they want me to do what!!” keep sight on why you are there and the one percenters that have a massive impact on children’s lives.

Alan Kidd
Alan  Kidd has been a lifelong educator. He started his career in Kununurra at the age of 20 and learnt more from his students than he should probably admit. From early in his career he questioned existing practice which seemed to be so often ridiculously ineffective. He is an advocate of “outside of the box” thinking and has a keen interest in identifying the motives behind educational decisions, student interactions and building staff capacity. He loves to ask the simple question, “why”, and look for the educational, social and moral imperative that unfolds, using this to re-think, re-plan and re-focus on what is important.....kids. He has spent his thirty seven year career creating effective school cultures with strong values based philosophies, positive, transparent communication and educational communities based on respect and care. Having worked all around Western Australia as a teacher and Principal, he has recently semi-retired and spends some of his time helping teachers and principals ask the hard questions.

Alan has been in Education for 37 years, with 30 years as Principal in several schools throughout Western Australia.

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION & STUDENT ENGAGEMENT: NAPLAN RESULTS?
Which comes first the engagement or the instruction?

With so much focus on explicit instruction within schools, it’s important for teachers to pause and reflect on the role engagement plays in creating orderly learning environments where students are given every opportunity to succeed.

Get your student engagement right and watch your key performance measures fly.
Shannon Wright
Shannon is a passionate educator who continues to teach in the classroom whilst also being the Principal of Greenfields Primary School.  He started his career at Mullewa District High School and has worked in many lower socioeconomic schools across the Goldfields, Mid West, Pilbara, Kimberley and Peel regions. These experiences have developed his beliefs around the importance of forming strong, respectful relationships with students and their families to get the most out of the schooling years. Having worked predominantly with disadvantaged students, he realises how powerful education can be in providing children with the skills they can take into adulthood to open up opportunities to overcome the significant disadvantages many have been born into. He believes engagement is the key by forming relationships with the families, getting the children to school through creating a safe, orderly learning environment and then expecting them to achieve through an unrelenting focus on explicitly teaching them the keys to successful learning. If we’re a part of their life lottery, it’s up to us to make sure our students get the Powerball.

Shannon specialises in:
Explicit Instruction & Student Engagement, Coaching, Data Analysis, Curriculum Development, Staff Development and Leadership Development.
Shannon completed a Bachelor of Commerce in Information Systems and Technology at Curtin University before completing the Graduate Diploma in Education at Edith Cowan University.
Dr. Gemma Foxall
SUPPORTING AUTISTIC LEARNERS:
SIX STEPS FOR SUCCESS
In 2013 multiple diagnoses were merged under one umbrella diagnosis called Autism Spectrum Disorder. An individual meeting the diagnostic criteria is given one of three levels according to their support needs.

In the classroom, teachers must cater for every student and are legally required to make reasonable adjustments to their planning, teaching and assessment practices. School leaders must ensure policies are inclusive and support children all around the spectrum.

Given these pressures, what proactive measures can be implemented to support the whole school community?

How do we measure success for Autistic learners?

What might be missing on Documented Planning materials?

Why is it that some strategies are helpful for some and not for others?

How can a neurological condition present as both a difference and a disability?

Dr. Gemma Foxall's 'hour of power' will address all of these issues and more. She will provide scientific context to inform, explain and improve the decision making processes taken by educators every day.
Dr. Gemma Foxall
Dr. Gemma Foxall provides professional learning and consultancy services for educators and allied health professionals supporting children on the spectrum.  She teaches at Edith Cowan University and has recently finished her first book which addresses questions like, 'What do teachers need to know about Autism Spectrum Disorder?' Gemma is an award winning public speaker and is passionate about merging her professional and personal experiences to create one-of-a-kind workshops, therapy programs and professional development opportunities.

Gemma taught in Early Childhood settings and primary schools before emigrating to Australia in 2006. In 2008, she was nominated for the Australian Teacher of the Year award and in 2009 she was awarded Level Three classroom teacher status in Western Australia. In 2010, Gemma's lessons were filmed to showcase effective teaching by Macmillan Australia and broadcast around the United States. The Department of Education awarded Gemma a scholarship in 2011 to complete a research project investigating principals' perceptions of pre-service teachers and she received a Masters of Educational Leadership for this work in 2014. In 2020, Gemma received her PhD, which synthesised literature from psychology, education, neuroscience and behavioural science in a practice-based research project which revealed new approaches to supporting Autistic learners.

During my 20 year teaching career, I noticed that my main passion was always the self-esteem of my students and how they responded to challenges.

My teaching career achievements include:
In 2009, the parent of one of my students made me a professional looking wooden plaque which read 'Teacher of the year, 2009, Miss Lavrick, LA10'. :)

On a serious note, in 2018 I was called to resign from my permanent teaching position at a magnificent school (Kingston Primary) to focus on developing a unique and effective program to teach children strategies to manage their thoughts and emotions with a HUGE focus on self-confidence. I have held hundreds of workshops for children in locations including Bunbury, Mandurah, Perth, Albany, Esperance, Kalgoorlie, Broome and Darwin. I have also held Parent Workshops and Professional Development Courses for educators and allied health professionals in collaboration with Dr Gemma Foxall from ACT for Autism.

In 2019, I developed my first online video tutorial program, Mind Ninja, and my program reached the Semi-Finals of the Curtin University, School of Education Teaching Excellence Awards in the WA Regional Achievement & Community Awards.

The Life Lessons Global Program has been featured in several newspapers and radio broadcasts throughout Australia and has been featured twice on GWN7 NEWS.
